What are the major issues?
Read an American newspaper and discover one major issue in the presidential election. Read an international newspaper and see if this issue is discussed elsewhere in the world. Compare and contrast the newspapers to determine if this issue is important in the USA and in another part of the world.

One of the major issues is financial situation of our economy. I found that in Washington Post.com Then I found out that since the US has a problem it has affected New Zealand as well. ( Also found that in NZ Herald.)
Kindall, Great searching. I have also heard that the downturn in the economy has affected Europe, Asia, the UK, and the Oceanic region. It certainly appears to be worldwide. I wonder if either candidate can fix the economy, and if their plans can be accomplished within one term of office. I suppose that will determine if the person who gets to be president in 2008 gets re-elected in 2012. Great job!
I agree that the economy is in trouble and is one of the major issues in the election. Jobs are hard to find and prices are high. I agree with the Tampa Tribune who thinks that John McCain can help with the economy. They said, “McCain understands that U.S. companies must compete worldwide and shouldn't have to pay one of the world's highest corporate tax rates. He knows that federal spending is out of control. He knows that economic growth only comes from hard work and real investment, not through wholesale redistribution of tax dollars as Obama promises.”
The New Zealand Herald disagrees and says that Obama “is widely favoured in nationwide polls as being better able than McCain to end the economic slide.” The economic issues are important in New Zealand too. They talk about food banks, inflation and recession.
Dylan, It is interesting to see that our economic troubles are affecting the rest of the world. Why do you think the Tamp Tribune thinks McCain can help the economy and the New Zealand Herald thinks Obama can help the economy?
I read the Washington Post from October 26, 2008 and the newspaper from France AFP from October 26, 2008. Both newspapers talk about the economy and the crisis in the USA. Both newspapers show that Obama seems to be the candidate that is going to win the election. The US economy is bad now and other countries are talking about it.
I read the American newspaper and a major issue is that Obama is a colored person, and they do not want a colored person to be a president of the U.S.
I also read the Carribean newspaper and they do not have an issue with a colored people being a president. In the Carribean some countries have colored presidents, but in the U.S. they never had a colored president.
I went on New York times news paper and two of the major issues are gun control and the death penalty. McCain goes against gun control while Obama is for some gun control.
Amanda, Please also read an international newspaper to see if this issue is discussed overseas.
Great job Travis
Nicholas, Why do you think other countries are talking about America's economy?
I think other countries are talking about America's economy because if our economy is bad other countries economies go bad. America has one of the best economies in the world.
One of the major issues I found was the war in Iraq and what Obama wants to do. In an American newspaper Obama said that he wanted to have the troops come home from the Iraq war when he is president. He said it would be about 16 months until this was done. He is trying to stop any more people from going over there.
I read in the Scotland paper that he told them the same thing. It is important for the troops to come home. The plan was to have them come home in the same time. But one thing the paper said was he need to help the people in Afghanistan. This was not said in the American paper.
A lot of what was written in the papers were the same which was Obama wants to get the troops out of Iraq.
I really don’t understand why they are there and I would like them to come home too.
Great job Nicholas. Isn't it interesting how our economy and politics affect other countries?
Madison, I think most adults are confused about this too. I was interested to read your comments on the Scotland paper. Great comparison.
I went on New York times newspaper and two of the major issues are gun control and the death penalty. McCain goes against gun control while Obama is for some gun control. No this is not discussed anywere else in the world.
Ms. McGrath, the Tampa Tribune said that McCain will cross party lines to help fix the economy. The New Zealand Herald thinks that too many people think McCain will be just like George Bush who they blame for trouble with the economy.
One of the major issues in this campaign is the status of our economy. According to the New York Times, Obama’s “time for change” speech focuses heavily on the economic issues that the voters are concerned about right now. Obama said he will raise taxes on those families making more than $250,000 a year. McCain on the other hand wants to give more to billionaires and to the same people who are greedy and irresponsible. According to the newspaper thisismoney out of the UK, “we anticipate more taxes, more regulation, a bigger government and a massive budget deficit. This sets the stage for a potential inflation bubble of massive dimensions, but that is unlikely to occur until 2011-12 at the earliest. It is in that environment that the dollar is likely to resume its decline against both the euro and yen” under an Obama administration.
I read an American news article called “Increasingly, Polls Shows Palin Hurting McCain’s Chances.” I also read a very similar article from an Australian newspaper called “Palin looms as party millstone.” Both articles have the same views on Governor Palin. They say she doesn’t have enough experience to be Vice President if McCain wins. They say she is not prepared. This is a major issue in The United States and in the world.
Alex- Obama , Democratic and I found it on the Orlando Sentinel Newspaper. Obama and Clinton are getting together . The Newspaper is cold The age, people think that Obama is grate in Melbourne Australia. Obama is the forerunner.
Alex- McCain is taking about what happened to him in the past and what is happening now. I think that is helpful.
McCain sufers difuclt problems. I think that is helpful.
Obama and Clinton are getting together. I think that is harmful.
Obama is taking about what happened to him in the past and what is happening now.
Dylan M, Dylan A, Michael, Alex and Amanda. I liked your comments, you did a great job reading the newspapers.
One major problem is our currency. I read a colombian news paper, and since the dollar fell in price so did the colombian peso because of our exports with them.
I read New York Times and The Guardian newspapers. They both said the bad economy in the U.S.A has brought us into a recession. The bad times are being felt across the world.
I read the New York Times and they said that many people can’t afford health insurance and both John McCain and Barack Obama have plans. Then I read the Irish Times and they spoke of Obama and McCain’s plans and if they would help. Obama’s plan was to give health coverage to everyone, but a man named Jennings says that without a legally formed mandate, Obama can’t use his plan. McCain’s plan is to give a $5,000 annual refundable tax plan to companies who offer employees insurance so the employees can pay for private insurance plans. Both New York and Ireland news papers determined that it was an important issue that we had problems with health insurance.
Jade, I found your comments about Obama's health plan interesting. It is interesting to see that a candidate can promise something but Congress and the Judicial Branch will remain as a check and balance system, making sure that whatever is put into place because of election promises is still going to be monitored and our best interests will still be protected. It is great to see our democratic process working.
Great job Alexis and Eric. From what I have read on international newspapers our economy is certainly impacting other countries. It is not only affecting our ability to trade with the countries but the value of their currency. I know that the Australian dollar has also lost value over the last few weeks.
One major issue is the financial crisis. I read that on the wall street journal that came to my house on thursday. It effects people world wide.(World wide means all over the world.)
and yes its important.
Good job Tucker.
One of the major issues of the election that I have found is income tax. The International newspapers explain about the income tax plans for McCain and Obama but don’t really have an opinion about them. The new income tax plans are important to Americans but not important to other people around the world because they do not have to pay them.
Great job Madison O'B
One of our magor issues is our financial situation. I found that in the Washington Post. Then I found that when the U.S. has a problem it has affected New Zealand to. [also found that in NZ Herald.]
One major issue is gun control,i read this in washigton post.
I also read a Mexican newspaper and it was called "el sol de mexico",and it said one major issue is gun control.
Great job Jose and Jacqueline
One of the major issues is the housing market.
Daniella, Was this discussed in US papers or overseas papers?
